Joseph J Cote, Jr.

Vice President, Business Development

Joe has been working in the field of Business Strategy, Technology Commercialization and Patent Monetization for over 20 years. As the Vice President of Business Development for ThinkFire, he is responsible for developing relationships with client companies that own or desire to own valuable patent portfolios. Joe is looking for clients with a significant number of patents that need a methodology for identifying which are their most and their least valuable assets, place a value on these assets, rank them in order of their value and determine the relationships to the host company’s products and business strategies as well as those of competitors. Then ThinkFire can assist these clients in developing strategies for improving or enhancing the overall patent estate. Finally, ThinkFire can monetize those patents determined to be non-critical to their strategic direction and plans.

Joe is uniquely qualified to understand the needs of those corporate individuals responsible for growing, maintaining and commercializing patents because he has been in their shoes – Joe was the President of Rockwell Scientific’s Patent Commercialization subsidiary and Director of Business Development for GTE Laboratories’ patent and technology licensing operations. In both these positions, Joe took over underperforming groups and turned them into profit-making operations for the first time in their corporate histories. He was also one of the co-founders of IPValue Management Inc., another well known IP consulting firm, and was Vice President of Marketing for Arthur D. Little Enterprises, a technology and patent development organization focusing on small companies and independent inventors.

Prior to becoming an expert in Patent Commercialization and Monetization, Joe was a controller for the fastest growing US division of Siemens Medical, a project management consultant for Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG) and the general manager for a Fiber Optic startup specializing in telecommunications products. He has a BS in Naval Science from the US Naval Academy and an SM from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Joe is a frequent speaker on Patent Monetization, Technology Licensing, Corporate Venturing and Entrepreneurship. He spent a semester as the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Bunker Hill Community College, the largest community college in Massachusetts where he was instrumental in initiating the college’s first student run business, a student spirit apparel business and their Entrepreneurship Club.
